John Crome (1768-1821) is one of Norwich’s most famous painters. Alongside fellow artist Robert Ladbrooke he founded the Norwich Society of Artists in 1803, often referred to as the ‘Norwich School’. He is best known for his romantic landscapes.
The most recent sale at Mander Auctions included a typical example of John Crome’s work, a study of a wooded landscape in oils, which sold for £580+premium.

In October 1792 Crome married Phoebe Berney at St Mary Coslany Church, Norwich, just a short walk from his home at 17 Gildencroft. This marriage that resulted in eight children, including the artists John Berney Crome and William Henry Crome. St Mary Coslany Church is the last surviving complete, original medieval round tower church in Norwich. It has since been converted into our latest saleroom.
