Buying
at auction

We are always keen to welcome new clients as well as our regular customers, so if you have any questions about how to buy, or about the lots themselves, we are very happy to help you.

Viewing

Once everything has been consigned for an auction we open our doors to the public for everyone to view the items.

The details of the viewing times and location can be found in the information section on our upcoming auctions page. If you can't make it in person we are happy to provide a condition report or additional photographs of an item upon request. These requests should be made before the day of the auction.

Bidding

To register to bid at an auction, you will need to make an account through our website. You will be asked to provide some basic information and your card details so that we can verify your identity.

You can bid at the auction in person. You will need to be registered on our website before you can bid, and you will need a number to hold up to the auctioneer which is provided at the reception desk.

You can also leave a 'maximum bid', also known as an absentee bid or commission bid, which is the highest amount that you would be willing to bid. The auctioneer will start at the lower end of the estimate or below unless others have also left maximum bids above this amount. Maximum bids can be left through this website until 9.30am on auction day. If your bid is successful you will receive notification by email after the auction.

You can also bid live online during the auction through our website. The auctioneer has a webcam, microphone and screen to display the online bids. The link for this can be found at the top of the catalogue page for the auction just before and during the auction. Potential online bidders should be aware that the pace of the auction can be quite quick and that bidding quickly is advised.

For higher value lots we offer a telephone bidding service. Telephone bidding should be arranged prior to the day of the auction.

Charges

We charge a buyer's premium on top of the sold price of 22.5% plus VAT. As an example, if you were to place a successful bid of £100, your invoice total would be £127.

We offer a live online bidding service through our website. This technology is powered by www.the-saleroom.com and there is an additional percentage charge of 3.6% (including VAT) of the sold price to use this service. Live online bidding is also available at www.the-saleroom.com with an additional percentage charge of 5.94% (including VAT).

Payment and Collection

All items must be paid for by 5.00pm on the Monday following the auction and items must be collected by prior appointment by the Friday following the auction at the latest. Click here for our booking page.

Payment can be made by card or by bank transfer. We do not accept cash. For our payments page click here

Postage and packing

We can offer postage and packing of some smaller items. Please get in touch before the day of the auction for a quote.

Terms and Conditions

Please note that when buying at auction you are not afforded the same consumer rights as when buying something from a retail environment. A sale by public auction is not considered a consumer sale under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (replaced by the Consumer Rights Act 2015). Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the condition of an item. As we offer a public viewing it is assumed that bidders have satisfied themselves and, therefore, distance selling regulations do not apply.

Although this may seem daunting, bidding at auction is often a great way to buy interesting second-hand items at a significantly cheaper price than in a gallery or antique shop.
